This large chart is from the 1758 edition of The English Pilot, Fourth Book (see Map 9). It shows the eastern coast from Long Island to "New Scotland" (Nova Scotia). The chart includes an inset of Boston Harbor with many recognizable features. Nantasket and Hull are depicted on the south side of the harbor entrance and Nahant opposite on the north side. West of Hull is Peddocks Island, north of it is Long Island, and further north is the trapezoidal Deer Island. Along or close to the shore one can identify North Weymouth neck and Houghs Neck south of Bantrey (Braintree, now Quincy) Bay and Squantum Neck and Thompson Island north of it. North of Dorchester Bay is the point of South Boston. The Boston peninsula is inexplicably distorted (see Map 10) since it had been depicted more accurately in preceding editions of the Pilot. This version was probably based on older information. |
