About this Map Ruysch's map is the third printed map to show European discoveries in the New World and the first to show discoveries made on Columbus' fourth voyage. Ruysch may have gone on a voyage to the New World himself and then used his firsthand knowledge in making this map. The map is drawn in fan-shaped conical projections and was printed from an engraved copper plate. Ruysch shows a series of imaginary islands surrounding the North Pole. Newfoundland, which appears on a map for the first time and is shown as a cape below Greenland (Gruenlant), is labeled"Terra Nova." Nearby islands are named"In [sulas] Baccalauras," one of the earliest references to the codfish industry, which already thrived in the area.
