Ruysch's map is the third printed map to show European discoveries in the New World and the first to show discoveries made on Columbus' fourth voyage. Ruysch may have gone on a voyage to the New World himself and then used his firsthand knowledge in making this map. The map is drawn in fan-shaped conical projections and was printed from an engraved copper plate. Ruysch shows a series of imaginary islands surrounding the North Pole. Newfoundland, which appears on a map for the first time and is shown as a cape below Greenland (Gruenlant), is labeled"Terra Nova." Nearby islands are named"In [sulas] Baccalauras," one of the earliest references to the codfish industry, which already thrived in the area. |
