By the time Ramusio published this map in 1556, New England -- here labeled, "Terra Denurumbega" -- was beginning to appear on maps. The name Norumbega came from an Abenaki Indian word meaning "quiet waters between two rapids" and was applied to northern New England after the voyage of Giovanni da Varrazano in 1524. Verrazano's report of his voyage was the source of information for Ramusio's map. Verrazano had, for example, called an idyllic spot in Rhode Island "Refugio"; on his map, Ramusio labeled Narragansett Bay "Port du Refuge." |
